How attendees describe this talk

I would tell them that it was a safe space to talk about relevant issues and collaborate with colleagues to brainstorm possible solutions. I also would share that I learned how important it is to speak with confidence and share how and why you are going to address controversial topics.

One thing we did was work to solve a problem that we have. I thought we wouldn't have any solution (as it was a problem I have), but we came up with different ways to solve it. It wasn't even about race or slurs in text - it was about typical problems in school.

I would say that I learned about being confident when talking about slurs and share some of the words that I did not know were inappropriate to know but do now.

Interesting and clear with the Do's and Don'ts. I appreciate the defining of terms- where words are roots (terms like cakewalk, grandfathered in, etc)

Sheldon provides a safe and brave space to empower us to start the uncomfortable discussions that are needed so much right now.

It was very good, but I still need more strategies in dealing with situations in books that are controversial.

It was a good session to learn more about teaching texts with slurs and how to address them in the classroom.

A safe space to ask questions and get clarity and reassurance on how to handle difficult situations.

This professional development helped me navigate important literature and every day conversations.

Feedback for Sheldon and the event

What types of books can we use that are contemporary, have higher level vocabulary, and help students understand other people and their cultures?

I only feel that the session takes about addressing books with slurs. The parent issues is so strong and I'm not sure how it is being addressed

I truly enjoy your honest and frank approach. Thank you for listening to our concerns as we try to do our best addressing stereotypes.

I found the list of racially offensive sayings or words to be interesting- would love a complete list

I really appreciated this session, and I found it helpful.

The different scenarios are helpful to talk through!
